Summer Blog Promo Tour: Partner Interviews
This week for the Summer Blog Promo Tour Ben and I are interviewing each other. I will be asking Ben questions here, but if you would like to read my interview with him be sure to check out his blog Ace of Bens. No more dilly-dallying, on to the interview!
Why did you choose to start blogging?
Ben: I started out with a Goodreads and a Twitter account and after about half a year of writing reviews only on Goodreads, I’d seen so many people I was following on both platforms had a blog. It sounded like something I wanted to try so I got to it. Soon blogging became a convenient and fun way for me to talk about books and get out my thoughts on various other subjects.
What do you find most challenging about blogging?
Ben: In general, I find the most challenging part to be motivation. I had SO many ideas for posts and quite a few books that I should write reviews for, but sometimes sitting down and actually writing is difficult. Of course, I think that’s a problem for nearly every writer.
How would you describe your blogging style?
Ben: Overall, I’d say it’s fairly casual. I never want any of my posts to sound too academic or dry, so I like adding humor in my opinion pieces and book tags, and I try to put as much emotion into my reviews as possible since I’m telling others how I feel about the book.
What do you do when you aren’t working on your blog?
Ben: I’m a full-time student and part-time worker. I’m majoring in Spanish and currently work as a campus tour guide for my university. I’m also an officer of my uni’s College Democrats and PRIDE clubs, so all of that keeps me pretty busy. When I’m just chilling out at home, though, I like to play guitar and, of course, read.
What is your favourite social media that you use to promote your blog? Why?
Ben: Twitter! I use Goodreads, too, but it’s more a casual place for me. I tried Instagram, but that quickly became another thing that I had to create content for and I just didn’t have the time. Twitter is somewhere I can just post my most random thoughts and it keeps my account active. Plus I’ve met so many amazing people through Twitter, so it has a special place in my heart.
How do you keep coming up with material/content for your blog?
Ben: Some of my best inspiration is current events and reading others’ blogs. I’ve made several posts about living as a transgender person with anxiety, and a lot of those posts bring in references to major headlines in those communities, (like LGBT Wrath Month and Scarlett Johansson being cast as a trans man). Other than that, all of the book tags and meme posts I’ve made come from having seen them on others’ blogs. Plus, of course, having books to review helps create content!
What’s your 2018 Goodreads Reading Challenge goal?
Ben: This year and last I’ve set it at 52 with the hopes of reading a book a week. Last year it was a bit easier than this year is turning out to be, though. I’m currently 11 behind schedule, so we’ll see happens.
What’s your favourite book that you’ve read so far this year?
Ben: I’ve gotta say my favorite so far is A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab. I’m so late to the series and this is the first book of hers I’ve read, but I loved it! I just checked out A Gathering of Shadows and A Conjuring of Light, so those are next on my reading list.
Who is your favourite author?
Ben: Definitely Anna-Marie McLemore. Her books are magical and so, so needed. The representation that she gives to Latines and people in the queer community is amazing, and her stories are just some of the best I’ve read.
What book are you most excited to read next?
Ben: After the Shades of Magic Series, I plan on starting some ARCs I got from BookCon and giveaways. Of those, I’m most excited to start Black Wings Beating by Alex London, The Soul Keepers by Devon Taylor, and The Brilliant Death by Amy Rose Capetta.
Is there anything else you would like to say in this interview?
Ben: Since I’ve gotten more seriously back into reading, I have quite a few reviews coming up in the following months. Also, at the beginning of August I’ll be attending the Philly Trans Wellness Conference, so I’ll have a recap post or two about that. Keep an eye out for both mine and Paige’s blogs because we still have four weeks of SBPT posts to show you! And, as always, have a great day, guys, gals, and nonbinary pals!
That's all for this interview! Next week, we will be posting here on It's A Paige Turner, so be sure that you're subscribed or following me on Twitter for when that goes up. Please also follow Ben as well!
Until next time, have a lovely rest of your day and read something awesome!
